Advaxis Begins Patient Education Initiative to Promote Better Understanding of Cervical Cancer Vaccines
Vice President of Clinical Development Interviewed by Television Stations Nationwide
North Brunswick, NJ June 15, 2006 -- Television stations across the country recently interviewed Dr. John Rothman, Vice President of Clinical Development for Advaxis, Inc. (OTCBB: ADXS - News), a developer of Listeria-based cancer vaccines. These interviews were part of the Company's extensive program to help educate the public on the differences between the current prophylactic or preventative vaccines and next generation therapeutic vaccines being developed by Advaxis.
The Company recently initiated Phase I/II clinical testing with its lead Listeria-based therapeutic cancer vaccine, Lovaxin C, which targets cervical cancer caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Women already with cervical cancer or infected with the virus cannot benefit from the current prophylactic vaccines on the market.
In his interviews, Dr. Rothman discussed the immune system's role in fighting cancer. Researchers have made an important observation regarding the potential of the immune response that is directed against Listeria and feel is a key component in the treatment of cancer. Pre-clinical data for Lovaxin C has demonstrated a robust immune response to tumors upon administration of the drug and eradication of tumors in more than half of the animals tested. Listeria is a common microorganism that humans are exposed to through diet.
"Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide in women under fifty," said Dr. Rothman on-camera. "Being able to use a microorganism that provokes such an intense immune response to treat cancer has shown to be promising." Among the television stations featuring Dr. Rothman were WBFF/FOX in Baltimore, WISN/ABC in Milwaukee and KAAL/ABC in Austin.
