ADVAXIS DEVELOPS INNOVATIVE APPROACH IN CANCER MECHANISM TARGETING

Single-Bacterium Listeria Vaccine Bioengineered into Dual Antigen Platform

North Brunswick, NJ – June 1, 2009Advaxis, Incorporated (OTCBB: ADXS) has developed an innovative approach in targeting cancer that enables a single bioengineered Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) bacterium to simultaneously secrete two different antigen-adjuvant fusion proteins.

Under a patent-pending filed on May 26, 2009 with the US Patent and Trademark Office, this advance would allow a vaccine, targeted against a cancer, to stimulate a therapeutic immune attack against two different therapeutic targets, whereby there is a tumor specific antigen, and an anti-angiogenic target designed to reduce the production of blood vessels necessary to allow cancer growth. As an example, in the treatment of breast cancer, the vaccine would target the HER-2 antigen and the VEGF-2 anti-angiogenic target.

With this approach, the single vaccine, with dual antigen targets, produces antigen-fusion proteins at a higher level than would be produced by mixing two separate strains of the vaccine. Increased efficacy of the vaccine may be expected as a synergistic effect, which is frequently observed in biologic systems when two unrelated mechanisms are attacked at the same time.

About Advaxis, Incorporated

Based in North Brunswick, New Jersey, Advaxis is developing proprietary Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) cancer vaccines based on technology developed by Dr. Yvonne Paterson, professor of microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania and chairperson of Advaxis’ scientific advisory board. Advaxis is developing attenuated live Lm vaccines that deliver engineered tumor antigens, which stimulate multiple simultaneous immunological mechanisms to fight cancer.
